EXPLORE CALGARY'S PAST AT YOUR OWN PACE

Want to see Calgary through a new lens? Heritage Calgary offers a series of self-guided walking tours that invite you to step into the stories behind Calgary’s most historic neighbourhoods, on your own schedule.

From the bustling heart of Stephen Avenue to the quiet charm of Elbow Park and the character-filled streets of Inglewood, each tour reveals a distinct layer of Calgary’s architectural and cultural heritage. Whether you’re a longtime resident or a curious newcomer, these tours offer a unique lens through which to experience the city.

How It Works
Each self-guided tour includes:

  • A downloadable PDF map and guide
  • A route with key heritage buildings and points of interest
  • Short historical notes and stories at each stop

The routes are flexible; there’s no “start” or “finish” line. You can jump in wherever you like, explore at your own pace, and linger where something catches your eye.

Featured Walks

Some of our favourites include:

  • Inglewood: Home to Calgary’s oldest buildings, like the Hunt House and Fire Station No.3
  • Chinatown: Discover the rich legacy of one of Calgary’s most culturally vibrant districts
  • Mount Royal: Stroll past early 20th-century homes that helped define Calgary’s elite neighbourhoods
  • Warehouse District: See how commerce shaped the city in its early days
  • Haunted Inglewood: A seasonal twist that blends heritage with local legends

In total, more than a dozen neighbourhoods are covered, each with its own distinct character and story.

More Than Just a Walk

These tours are part of Heritage Calgary’s mission to preserve and promote the city’s shared heritage. As a civic partner of the City of Calgary, the organization evaluates historic sites, advises the council, and maintains Calgary’s inventory of heritage resources, ensuring they remain active and accessible.

By taking part in a walking tour, you’re not just enjoying a nice day out; you’re helping keep these stories alive.
